India pharma companies develop versions of Wegovy to get in on weight-loss windfall

Indian drugmakers aiming to grab a slice of the burgeoning weight-loss treatment sales pie, both at home and abroad, have begun developing their own versions of Novo Nordisk's wildly in demand Wegovy. With some analysts predicting a weight-loss market reaching $100 billion a year or more by the end of the decade, executives at Sun Pharma, Cipla, Dr Reddy's and Lupin -- some of the world's largest generic drugmakers -- all said they have started work on Wegovy versions. Novo Nordisk has been unable to produce enough Wegovy to meet demand in more than half a dozen countries where it has already launched, amid record global obesity rates and people looking for easier alternatives to diet and exercise.

India shares close at two-week low as hawkish Fed spooks investors

India's benchmark indexes on Thursday closed at a two-week low in a broad-based selloff, after the U.S. Federal Reserve signalled that interest rates will remain elevated for longer. The Nifty 50 closed 0.8% lower at 19,742.35 points, its lowest close since Sept.7, while the S&P BSE Sensex declined about 0.85% to 66,230.24 points. The Fed on Wednesday held key interest rates unchanged as widely expected, but warned that the battle against inflation was far from over.

India's Torrent Pharma says nothing to disclose on Cipla stake buy report

India's Torrent Pharmaceuticals on Friday said it has no information requiring disclosure under listing regulations, after the Economic Times reported that it was in talks to buyout the stake of rival Cipla's top shareholders. Torrent said it "did not comment on speculative reports in the absence of verified data," and that it was not in a position to comment on the movement in its share price. Torrent Pharma is interested in buying out top shareholder Hamied family's 33.47% stake in Cipla and is trying to put together financing for the purchase, ET reported.

Blackstone to submit bid for stake in India's Cipla- report

The stake sale will formally start the exit of the Hamied family who had founded Cipla in 1935, the report added. Cipla and Blackstone did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment. The move will also trigger an open offer for an additional 26% of Cipla, upon full subscription of which Blackstone would end up owning as much as 59.4% of Cipla's stake, according to the report.

Top shareholders of Indian drugmaker Cipla are in talks to sell a part of their stake in the company to private equity players including Blackstone and Baring Asia, Moneycontrol reported on Thursday. The company is not aware of any event that requires disclosure under listing regulations, Cipla said in a exchange statement. The drugmaker's shareholders are looking to sell a part of their total 33.47% stake in the firm to strategic investors who can oversee a revamp, help enhance capital allocation and improve operational efficiency, the report said, citing sources familiar with the matter.

Indian drugmaker Cipla said on Friday its U.S. unit was recalling six batches of albuterol sulfate inhalation aerosol due to a "container defect". "The company is initiating a recall in the U.S. due to a market complaint for one single inhaler, where leakage was observed through the inhaler valve," the pharmaceutical company said in a statement. The company's "Albuterol Sulfate HFA Inhalation Aerosol" is a generic therapeutic equivalent version of an inhaler from Merck & Co, according to Cipla's website.

India's Cipla posts 45% jump in Q4 profit on domestic drugs business boost

Cipla Ltd, India's third-largest drugmaker by sales, reported a 45.2% increase in fourth-quarter profit on Friday, driven by strength in its key domestic and North American drugs business. Shares of the company, which manufactures generic versions of respiratory drugs Advair and Albuterol, were flat after the results but closed 0.7% lower in their second straight session of losses. Cipla's consolidated net profit jumped to 5.26 billion rupees in the quarter ended March 31 from 3.62 billion rupees a year earlier.
