Canada's main stock index dropped on Wednesday, hurt by losses in the consumer staples sector after food retailer Loblaw Cos reported disappointing quarterly earnings. * At 9:47 a.m. ET (1347 GMT), the Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX Composite index was down 34.6 points, or 0.21%, at 16,538.08. * The consumer staples sector fell over 1%, hurt by a 3% decline in shares of Loblaw after the company missed quarterly profit expectations as it continues to invest in building its e-commerce network and retail stores.
Loblaw Cos Ltd reported a 2.4% fall in quarterly profit on Wednesday, as the Canadian food retailer continues to invest in building its e-commerce network and retail stores. The retailer, which sells everything from grocery to wireless mobile connections, has been renovating its stores and growing its online business as the company fights with bigger rivals such as Amazon.com Inc and Walmart for market share. Loblaw, the country's biggest grocery retailer, also recorded about C$16 million ($12.2 million) of restructuring and other related charges in the quarter.
Canada's biggest grocery retailer also reported a dip in second-quarter earnings, as a rise in inflation hit sales of food and other household items at its stores. Canada's annual inflation rate rose unexpectedly to a seven-month high in May.
