Iron Mountain Inc. announced it is buying the U.S. operations of Phoenix-based IO Data Centers LLC for $1.3 billion. Iron Mountain executives said IO brings a “diversified roster” of more than 550 customers that includes blue chip financial services, aerospace, federal government and technology companies among its top 10. IO’s “strong enterprise and cloud customer base is complementary to that of our existing data center business, and more than 40 percent of IO’s customers are also customers in our core records and data management businesses,” said Mark Kidd, senior vice president and general manager of Iron Mountain Data Centers.
Iron Mountain (IRM) fell to the bottom of the S&P 500 today, after announcing its acquisition of data center services provider IO Data Centers and a stock offering. Iron Mountain fell $2.90, or 7.1%, to $37.80, while the S&P 500 rose 4.12 points, or 0.15%, to 2664.11. Iron Mountain said it would buy IO Data Centers for or $1.315 billion, and as much as $60 million, based on future performance. The storage and cloud data company also announced a public offering of 14,500,000 shares of its common stock to finance the deal, along with an $825 million debt offering.
Archiving experts Iron Mountain took another step toward going digital, with a $1.3 billion deal to buy four U.S. data centers. Shares of the real estate investment trust (IRM) are down 7% this morning, to 37.88, as Iron Mountain offers 14.5 million common shares and raised $825 million in debt, to finance the deal. Eager to evolve beyond its heritage of storing hard-copy records, Iron Mountain has been snapping up data centers this year.
