Shares of avocado grower Calavo Growers Inc. were indicated up about 2% in premarket trade in Thursday, after the company reported fiscal second-quarter earnings and sales that rose above expectations, while saying a "sharp increase" in avocado prices have boosted sales totals but weighed on gross margins. Net income for the quarter to April 30 rose to $16.3 million, or 93 cents a share, from $14.1 million, or 80 cents a share, in the year-ago period. Excluding non-recurring items, adjusted EPS rose to 92 cents from 80 cents, beating the FactSet consensus of 77 cents. Sales rose 8% to $286.2 million, above the FactSet consensus of $283.0 million. "The leading contributor to these results was our Fresh segment, especially our core avocado business, which registered yet another outstanding performance," said Chief Executive Lee Cole, as avocado unit volume and gross profit "increased significantly" from last year. The stock has rallied 25.3% year to date through Wednesday, while the S&P 500 has gained 12.7%.
